That's terrible. My department (Ocean Engineering at MIT) was closed January 1st of last year. Now it's a "center" in the mechanical engineering department. The undergraduate program (rated one of the best in the Institute) is now a "track" in the MechE curriculum, with only a couple of required OE classes.
I cried and cried the day it closed.
