So I was perusing the daily yahoo news, catching up on the latest headlines, when a particular story caught my eye. It pertained to my very own beloved university, Tulane! But did it highlight the steadfast determination, strong leadership, and miraculous recovery of our school? The spirit of New Orleans? The majority of the student body that were ready to come rushing back to school and make a difference for our city? No! It was talking about some brat freshman who was complaining that Hah-vard wouldn't let her permanently transfer because of the original agreement that said that all visiting students would return to Tulane at the end of the semester. She just couldn't understand why they were forcing her back to Tulane, because, afterall, it's her education, she should go where she wants to. Another freshman that was interviewed claims "everyone says I should give it a chance, but why should I *have* to give it a chance?". Well WAH WAH WAH WAH WAH! Come on everyone, let's sound like a selfish brat in front of millions of readers! Let's singlehandedly give Tulane a bad rep by not only acting like it's the end of the world that you have to attend this wonderful school but also sounding like a complete dumbass while doing it! Believe me, if it is so painful to return, WE DON'T FUCKING WANT YOU HERE!
First of all, Scott Cowen, the president of Tulane, has to be the best leader we could've possibly had during this dilemma, and has literally picked the school up off its proverbial ass, brushed it off, and set it running again. Believe me, FEMA has done nothing, and I mean nothing for Tulane. Come to think of it, FEMA hasn't done much for Louisiana or New Orleans in general, but particularly not Tulane. Our governor hasn't done anything either! Did I mention that 75% of New Orleans is still considered uninhabitable? Even NOW? Why isn't anyone doing anything about it? Oh right, they're still TALKING ABOUT IT! Tulane is already almost completely rebuilt, and they sustained widespread water damage! It was completely the work of Tulane, and no one else, that got Tulane back on its feet. And guess what?? School starts January 17, ON TIME, and life goes on.
Second of all, you have to be a complete dumbass to not see the opportunity that this catastrophe has posed. By returning to Tulane in the spring, you can be directly involved with the rebuilding of the greatest city in America, and be a part of one of the biggest historical events in US history. One cannot even begin to realize the educational opportunities that this has posed. I mean, it's not every day that an entire fucking city gets wiped out, and it's not every day you get to be directly involved with the recovery. Imagine the scientific studies that could be conducted, the psychological studies, the engineering that is required to rebuild a city! Not only do you get that life experience, you damn better believe that will look a hell of a lot better on a resume than attending Hah-vard and sitting your ass in a library, worrying about YOUR education. If you cared about YOUR education, you would be BEGGING to come back to Tulane, because at the moment I can't think of anywhere else in the country where you would have as huge of an educational experience as here. Why can't people understand this?
Another "excuse" for not returning that I keep repeatedly hearing is "waaah, it's not going to be like New Orleans anymore, that's the whole reason I decided to go to Tulane!" First of all, shame on you for picking a school purely for location, and second of all, you only wanted to come here for the parties! It may not be as pretty, there may be less stores, etc. open, but it is still New Orleans, and nothing can take that away, not even a huge fucking hurricane. New Orleans has a certain...something... and only experiencing it first hand will you then be able to understand it. The culture there is so deeply rooted, it will spring back time and time again - those are some insanely tough people. But you know what? These little freshmen will never understand that, New Orleans isn't branded into their heart like it is for the rest of us.
Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans??
I do, and I have to keep myself from crying every time I think about it.
In the wise words of Hermione, from the latest Harry Potter movie "everything's going to change now, isn't it?" --- it is going to change, New Orleans will be different, but why can't we count it as a blessing that we have Tulane in the community to help sustain New Orleans and the recovery effort, and that we, as students, can help with that recovery first hand? Go back to Harvard, you assholes.
